The Lone Ranger is a 2013 action Western film directed by Gore Verbinski and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The film stars Armie Hammer as The Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as Tonto.

The Lone Ranger is an action-comedy in which the masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. A Native American spirit warrior, Tonto (Johnny Depp), recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice. The two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.

The film received poor reviews, opening to a rather sorry 27% "Rotten" rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 187 reviews.[1] It also bombed at the box office, having cost $375 million to produce and release and so needing $800 million to break even. In opening weekend it earned roughly $29 million domestically beaten by Despicable Me 2, which opened at the same time and took the top spot in the box office during opening weekend. It continues the streak of Westerns which have failed at the modern box office and was also unfavorably compared to John Carter, a film which the Disney studio had released the previous year and which also considered a bomb.[2] So far it has earned roughly $84 million worldwide.[3]
