The movie takes place in the mind of the 12 (11 at the start of the film) year old girl named Riley Anderson and centers on the five emotions that live in her head: Joy (the unofficial leader of the group), Anger, Fear, Disgust, and Sadness. All of the emotions have a definite job in helping Riley function in her everyday life, but Sadness does not know her role, and neither do any of the other emotions; as a result, they all bully her.
When Riley and her family move to a new home, an accident in Riley's mind sends Joy and Sadness from headquarters to another faraway part of Riley's mind, along with some of Riley's core memories, leaving Anger, Fear, and Disgust in charge. Together, Joy and Sadness must make their way through Riley's mind back to Headquarters with the memories before Riley suffers a total meltdown.
