Darth Maul or simply Maul is an antagonist in the Star Wars franchise. He appears as a playable character in Disney Infinity: 3.0 Edition, and will be playable in all three Star Wars play sets.[1] He is force-sensitive.He was confirmed to be playable on Toy Box TV,[2] but had already been revealed on the leaked box art images for 3.0. He was released on November 2, 2015 in the US and November 6th in UK.[3]
Description
Darth Maul is a Dathomirian Zabrak, a hybrid of two alien races. As such, he has an appearance unique to himself. Maul's skin is colored with red and black stripes all over his entire body. He has a series of small horns in a ring around his head. His face is long with a large nose and sharp teeth. Every piece of Maul's attire is solid black. He wears thick gloves, boots, pants, and an upper garment covered by a Sith tunic, all of which are black. Maul has also been known to wear a long black cloak that covers all of the aforementioned from head to toe and has a hood; but Maul prefers not to wear this cloak in battle. His figure does not feature this cloak.
Maul's weapon of choice (and trademark weapon) is his special lightsaber. It features a silver hilt and two red blades, one on each end of the hilt. The two blades enable him to battle two opponents at once, giving him a considerable advantage in battle. He was trained by Brother Viscus. The nightsister Mother Talzin gave him dark side powers.
Star Wars
Episode I
Darth Maul appears in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace as the Sith apprentice of Darth Sidious (A.K.A. Emperor Palpatine). He is sent by his master to hunt down and kill Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi. First, he follows them to Tatooine, and attempts to kill Qui-Gon; but Qui-Gon manages to escape. He then follows them to Queen Amidala's palace on Naboo, where he corners the Jedi and their companions. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon then prepare to duel him two-on-one, but then Darth shows the Jedi his special double-bladed Lightsaber. The three then battle through the interior of the palace, until they reach the palace's reactor room, which had a large reactor shaft in the center. It was there that Maul plunged his lightsaber into Qui-Gon's abdomen, fatally wounding him. Furious, Obi-Wan charged at Maul, attacking him and severing his lightsaber in two. Maul threw the non-functional half of his weapon away and shoved him down the reactor shaft. Obi-Wan managed to grab onto the side of the chamber, but Maul kicked Obi-Wan's lightsaber down the shaft. Hanging on for his life, Obi-Wan managed to use the force to gradually move his fallen master's lightsaber towards him, and then managed to jump back upwards onto the ledge and grab the lightsaber at the same time. After a brief battle, Obi-Wan used the lightsaber to sever Maul in half, sending him tumbling down the shaft.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars
After the events of Episode I, the Jedi in Star Wars: The Clone Wars had long believed that Darth Maul was dead; however, this was not true. Maul's brother, Savage Oppress, found Maul, who had put into exile on Lotho Minor and had lost most of his memories. Oppress took Maul a Dathomirian leader, who nursed him back to physical and psychological health, giving him a new set of cybernetic legs. When he had been rehabilitated, Maul along with Oppress set out on a quest for revenge on Obi-Wan Kenobi, who had cut off his legs. Maul's first step to revenge was to reveal himself to be alive to Obi-Wan. To attract the Jedi's attention, he went to Raydonia to kill innocent villagers. When Kenobi arrived, Maul and Oppress beat him up and prepared to torture him. However, Obi-Wan escaped with the help of Asajj Ventress.
Maul's later attempts at revenge included an attempted alliance with the Weequay pirates (which ended in Oppress getting his arm cut off), and ordering the attack and seizure of the New Mandalorian capital city. Eventually, Maul finally got his revenge by committing the murder of Obi-Wan's true love, Duchess Satine Kryze, in front of him.
After Maul seized Mandalore, Darth Sidious, Maul's old master, came to take out Maul and Oppress. (Maul saw himself as independent from Sidious and had been working independently from Sidious, and Sidious had come to see Maul as a rival.) Sidious dueled the two Sith brothers and won overwhelmingly. While he murdered Oppress, he chose to keep Maul alive, stating that he had other plans for him. He then began to torture him with force lightning. This was Maul's last appearance in the series.
Star Wars Rebels
After being defeated by Palpatine and watching Mother Talzin die, Maul goes in to hiding. 14 years later, he re-emerges and has a part in the temptation of Ezra Bridger.
Disney Infinity 3.0
Darth Maul has been confirmed to appear in Disney Infinity 3.0 as a playable character. He will be playable in Toy Box and in all three Star Wars play sets. Because he is a villain, he will be a crossover character in all three, including the Twilight of the Republic Play Set, which is his "native" play set.[4] Maul will also appear as a boss in that play set,[5] and can be spawned by the Boss Fight Spawner Creativi-Toy.
Abilities
Maul fights with his trademark double-bladed lightsaber, and also has a lot of karate-style melee moves. He is Force sensitive, and as such possesses all basic Force-related abilities, along with some others unlocked via his Skill Tree. These include a counterattack which both blocks and repels an attacking enemy, a leaping attack called Air of Superiority, a lightsaber throw move called Power of the Force, an attack which causes Maul to charge an enemy and toss them away with his lightsaber (called Darth Dash Attack), and the ability to repel incoming blaster shots. He also has a Super Jump, a Block Breaker, and an Air Assault. His Force Ability is Force Concussion, which causes Maul to absorb a black substance and then perform a powerful ground pound attack which both knocks back an temporarily stuns nearby enemies.

Development
The Disney Interactive artists' drawings of Maul at first depicted a much bigger, more intimidating looking character than the final design ended up being. (Some drawings even showed him shirtless.) When the artists showed their initial designs to LucasFilm, they asked them to rein the character in, because Ray Park, the actor who depicted Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, was not a very big man.[6]
According to Jeff Bunker, former Avalanche Software VP of Art Development, designing Maul in 2D format was easy; the difficult part was translating that into a figure. He said that Maul was probably the hardest character to turn into a figure. There are a number of pieces that come together to make Maul's figure; he has many layers in his robes, and each of the horns on his head is an individual piece.[6]
Trivia

- Darth Maul is one of seven Playable Characters in Disney Infinity 3.0 who are deceased in the current timeline of events in the Star Wars saga. The others are Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Kanan Jarrus, Han Solo and Luke Skywalker.
- He is the only Star Wars villain with a Force Push ability.
- He's also the only villain that does not have a Light FX variant (due to technological restrictions involving his double bladed lightsaber.)
- At the end of Star Wars Episode I, Maul was severed in half, and in his return in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, he was given a pair of robotic cyborg legs but however, Maul's figure depicts him with his legs still attached. According to the game's development team, the reason for this is that the pre-defeat version of Maul's character is the most popular.[7]
- Darth Maul is voiced in-game by Sam Witwer, who voiced him in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels. He is also well-known for infamously voicing Galen Marek/Starkiller from The Force Unleashed series, along with being the current voice for Darth Sidous/The Emperor in all three appearances in the same series (including in Rise Against the Empire Play Set).
